Widgets ‘Create Local Online Sports Hubs’

With the aid of widgets, online newspapers can become the first point of call for local sports fans.

That’s the view of a spokesman for Tribune Media Services (TMS), which has recently expanded its sports TV tracking widget services.

A business unit of America’s Tribune Company, TMS started its broadcast tracker widget for baseball teams earlier this year and has now extended the service to cover all major professional and college team games.

The widgets keep fans updated with details on forthcoming broadcasts of their teams' matches and they can be integrated by users into their own pages, reports Editor & Publisher.

Executive director of sales Cameron Yung said of this feature: “The fact that these widgets are portable provides newspapers with a unique opportunity to extend their brand, even beyond their own website.”

Director of new product development Greg Loose added in a press statement that the widgets play a key role in helping news websites become information hubs.

“The expansion of our sports widget product enables newspapers to become the one-stop local market leader in online sports TV information.”

TMS partnered with NewsGator to create the sports widgets.
